This Blog is about Verena Baumann's drawings and illustrations.
The very first thing that captured me about this portrait was your smile. It is radiant and lights the whole drawing up. I creates enormous contrast with the dark heavy colors of the drawing and the heavy smudge across the face hides what appears to be joyful eyes, engrossed in the task of drawing. Above all of that it feels open, in a way that lets us inside the joy you take in your drawings.
Thank you so much Spyros for this wonderful comment
Yes, this is a hauntingly moving figure... a Pieta as artist and nurturer. It is such an emotionally strong composition filled in with so many cross-currents of feeling. As Spyros points out, the sly smile and beautiful eyes hidden behind a veil of exquisite heaviness... a delicate beauty in itself. But overall, the quality of the application of the pastel on the paper is so strong and confident in its hard pressed strokes and extraordinary use of color... so deeply moving. so deeply beautiful.
